Celebrating 125 Years of The Eastern MarketBy Yvelette Stines on May 8th, 2016 /
Whether it is your first or fiftieth time visiting the Eastern Market, there is a level of excitement that comes with the visit. A long time memory is created, a new friendship is made, and there is a positive energy carried throughout the whole location. This feeling and experience has created traditions, memories, and great shopping for the citizens and visitors of Detroit. The landmark is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year and there is more to come that will help the development, food entrepreneurs, economic growth, and most importantly the people of Detroit.
When it comes to The Eastern Market and the growth of the city, Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market Corporation (EMC) is enthusiastic and proud of the development and contributions that EMC has made to the city of Detroit. “Eastern Market continues to leverage the rich history of Eastern Market to make Detroit healthier, wealthier, and happier,” says Carmody.
Eastern Market has contributed to creating a healthier Detroit by “running food programs to include food access, working to increase the supply and demand of healthy food, and using healthy food as a way to address the skyrocketing waves of obesity and type 2 diabetes,” Carmody explains.
To help the wealth in the city, the Eastern Market is supporting infrastructure to help incubate and accelerate growth for start-up business as well as providing high levels of economic services to more established food companies. “This helps to increase the number of food businesses and jobs in the food sector,” says Carmody. He continues to explain that making Detroit “happier includes embracing the historical Saturday market where 30-40 thousand people come to the market and enjoy (the experience) and each other.”
Although the patrons and community are important, Eastern Market Corporation has also been focusing on helping food entrepreneurs create and sustain successful businesses with access to technical assistance, experts in the industry, micro-grant programs, and more.
“Over the last few years we’ve been building up a network of shared use community kitchens and license kitchens for food entrepreneurs who can’t afford their own full time kitchen,” says Carmody. They are also proud of the fact of the network that is created. “From 1891 on, Eastern Market has served Southeast MI well for providing a place for a nominal fee. They can serve, produce, generate income, and also get a lot of customer feedback because all of the people shopping at Eastern Market are buying directly from producers.”
Eastern Market Corporation has also extended support to the merchant service business owners. This will help entrepreneurs in this sector with pricing, packing and redesigning menu items for extended shelf life without changing flavor. The support will also help with storage, refrigeration, and more.
With all of the programs and the continuous thriving of the Eastern Market, there is a lot to celebrate during the 125th Anniversary. The gala will take place September 30, 2016 and on Saturday, October 1, 2016 there will be a public birthday party for Eastern Market.
With many preparations underway, the Eastern Market Corporation wants to celebrate the supporters and citizens of Detroit. They are currently looking for 125 of the most compelling and interesting stories about the Eastern Market to share to the public as part of the celebration.
