Taste the Mitten This Holiday Season with Mitten CrateBy Amanda Lewan on November 11th, 2014 /
When Andrew Chmielewski and Cory Wright were both living in Brooklyn they loved to support everything made local. They also kept thinking about their home state and how they might replicate the same support for local food businesses.
A few years later the two moved back home to Metro Detroit. Andrew started a toffee company Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee and was already in contact with a lot of local food businesses. It seemed like a natural fit to start curating the taste of Michigan and share it with the world.
Mitten Crate ships to you monthly, or sends one time gifts. Inside the box are curated food items all made right here in the state and often tied to the season. We received the October box pictured here with Chewy’s Gourmet, The Twisted Pretzel, Detroit Bold Coffee, Shurms, Z’s Dipping Sauce, and Kitchen with a Cause love bars which were absolutely delicious.
It’s the perfect gift for the foodie in your family, or just about anyone who enjoys Michigan made treats. The company has been going for a little over a year now and has seen plenty of great results, with a large online following and plans to hire a full time team member soon.
When they sold their first box they wanted to give back to a food organization. So, they went to Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and knocked on the door with a donation. Every box purchased today donates back the cost of 3 meals to Gleaner’s. So you’re enjoying a bit of special food for yourself, and giving back to those who are hungry too.
Andrew and Cory say they enjoy getting to support foods they love made locally, and helping promote local businesses. The box helps small businesses reach new customers without any additional costs right now. Some customers have enjoyed it so much they’ve been bombarded businesses with orders afterwards.
“Buying local is the best way to support the local Michigan economy,” said Cory. “There are so many hardworking Michiganders making delicious, unique products and supporting them is a great way to keep dollars in the local community and help to create jobs in a budding industry.”
Mitten Crate is currently located in Royal Oak. Watch out for their upcoming holiday gift boxes, you won’t want to miss it.
“The boxes often reflect food for the season we’re in, so keep an eye out for upcoming winter specials,” said Andrew.
They currently have a holiday special including three months of Mitten Crate subscription for only $99. Paid subscriptions include shipping. This is the perfect gift for any Michigander this holiday season. First box arrives in time for Christmas, second one in January, and the third one right around Valentines Day, in February.
