From Olszewski on his recent projects:
“I am a Native American (active member of the Chippewas of Mnjikaning First Nation) visual artist driving through Detroit and spending a few days with family/friends. In summer 2016, I will retrace the 1500-mile trek of Antoine Cadillac by driving a mid-1990s Cadillac DeVille from Detroit, Michigan to Quebec City, Quebec and back. On this journey, I will be taking my theories about cultural identity and making a tangible body of work.
The vehicle will be on display with a vinyl car cover at each location. The covers are painted and decorated with corporate logos, text and Native American imagery. Participants can add to the surface by drawing, painting or writing (creative materials will be provided). When the journey is complete, the vinyl car cover(s) will serve as the foundation for my visual exploration and used in professional gallery/museum exhibitions.
This is my fourth Vision Quest project. In 2012, I retraced the Trail of Tears from New Echota, Georgia to Tahlequah, Oklahoma. In 2014, I followed the footsteps of General George Armstrong Custer from Monroe, Michigan to Little Big Horn, Montana. In 2015, I was accepted to the Jentel Artist Residency and drove from Savannah, Georgia to Sheridan, Wyoming. While driving I listen to echoes of the past in the contemporary American landscape. Through my experiences, I have produced photographs, drawings, paintings, videos, sound recordings, collages and installation works.”
