The phrase social entrepreneur is starting to become synonymous with Detroit. There’s quite a few entrepreneurs working to solve urban issues with a hope for scalable solutions.

Now, there’s a great event for those interested in building a company that makes a social impact. Detroit will host their first Startup Weekend Detroit for Social Entrepreneurs on Friday, May 29th – Sunday, May 31st.  Startup Weekend events are a weekend long event where entrepreneurs, technologies, and creatives can come together to build a company in one weekend.

If you have an idea, are looking to form a team, or just want to learn more about social entrepreneurship this is a great way to get involved in the community.

Why the social entrepreneurship angle? Local organizer and entrepreneur Nicole Mangis says that social enterprise helps entrepreneurs make more informed decisions for their business to understand a broader impact on the community.

She also believes that a social entrepreneurship mindset is good for all business.

?”From improving the talent pool, to lowering supply chain costs, to improving energy efficiences the benefits of engaging these “social enterprise” tactics can do great things for a bottom line,” said Mangis. “It’s about the way in which entrepreneurs chose to do business – not at the expense of people, environment, or community, but by embracing such stakeholders.”

Save the date to join the first ever Startup Weekend for Social Entrepreneurship.
